For what it is worth: I owned a Canon printer for years and always turned it off when not in use (after 8 years, I purchased a new Canon Printer-MX922 with more features). Being a consumer, my usage of printing was very minimal (I may not print anything for 1-2 weeks). The ink cartridges would last me over 6 months.
I've heard turn it off or it dries out the ink faster. I've also heard definitely leave it on, if turned off it will have to recalibrate and run through a cycle once powered back up and that uses up your ink. I'm aware of the Energy Saving Settings that power off the printer after a period of time.
Always best to leave the printer on and left it go into sleep mode. Otherwise every power up will perform a maintenance cycle using some ink. Secure the printer? From what?

I will recommend only turning off the power on the printer if you decide to do this and not disconnecting from the power outlet. The reason is because the printer will still have a little power and keep the timers running.
