Hold the black print cartridge so that the nozzle plate faces upward (see Figure 2.1). Use the swab to wipe clean the face and edges of the print cartridge as shown in Figure 2.1 by the arrows. Do not wipe the nozzle plate. Inspect the cartridge to see if any debris is left behind.

Laser printer streaks usually mean the printer’s toner cartridge or drum unit has a problem. On some printers the drum unit is part of the toner cartridge, but on cheaper printers, it may be a separate piece. I do computer security for a living, but at my first and second IT jobs, I was in charge of printers, among other things.

Firstly try the print head cleaning option in the printer menu. If that doesn’t work, then get some paper towels, cotton buds (Q-tips) and warm soapy water. Take the ink cartridges out, switch the printer off / unplug it. Take the cartridge and place it on the paper towel, then check where the ink comes out.

If your laser printer is causing horizontal black lines you either have a problem with the optics or the drum. Cleaning the optics and replacing the drum should fix the problem in most cases. If problems still persist after cleaning the optics, or you don’t feel comfortable changing the drum on your machine, give us call.

You'd know if it was the cartridge if you made the printer jam while the paper was under the cartridge. Start printing one of the reports from the printer control panel, when you hear the printer start running, give it about 1-2 seconds then open the front door, the paper should be jammed underneath the toner cartridge- if the image on the paper looks clean and theres no smudge, then its the fuser.
